Cheltenham Jazz Festival 05
Report by Richard Lee, Director Jerwood Space

A few notes focusing on the Jerwood Rising Stars programme.
Steve Tromans and the Howl Band

Tromans as leader/composer and [Sid] Peacock reading (in a most
engaging and assured way) Ginsberg's "Howl". Easily the musical high
point so far: Tromans' piano playing as thrilling as his brief solos on
Saturday suggested [note: this was at Sid Peacock’s SURGE gig],
while guitarist Frank Moon & tenor player Ed Johnston shone too.
Not as technically proficient as Tromans but their energy was great.
Two drummers and someone sampling, together with a theoretical essay
in the programme explicitly suggested a tribute to Ornette Coleman.
It was, but the classical structure & assured ensemble playing made it
much more - a pretty important work of British contemporary music –
at least from such young players.

The sooner it receives a Radio 3 broadcast the better.

Thanks to all concerned for making it a most (my most?) memorable festival.
